Sunday, December 10th, 2023 commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights (UDHR), the milestone document that was created as a common standard of civil liberties for all people and all nations. Representatives from different legal and cultural backgrounds and all regions of the world drafted the UDHR that was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on December 10, 1948 as General Assembly Resolution 217A. Eleanor Roosevelt served as Chairperson of the Drafting Committee and played a leading role in shaping the Declaration.
Today the subject of human rights is as critical as ever in addressing the myriad social, political, economic and moral challenges faced by all peoples of the world. Human rights connect us to each other through a shared set of principles and responsibilities. Wherever human rights are not protected political violence erupts, and in all countries infringement of human rights threatens the health, security, prosperity and freedom to practice religion, voice opinions and enjoy personal independence.
Yet even today the subject of human rights and the content as well as spirit of the UDHR are largely unfamiliar to most people.
PLEASE JOIN US FOR A MEET-AND-GREET to examine the history of human rights, discuss ways in which this vital subject applies to today’s exigent global challenges, and explore how it will affect us in 2024.
