Politico reports: Running with a promise to “spoil” the 2024 presidential contest, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. just received a sign that he might be making good on that pitch: A recent poll shows him with 22 percent support in a hypothetical three-way race against President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden, by contrast, would take 39 percent of the vote, and Trump would come away with 36 percent, according to the Quinnipiac University’s survey. In another positive sign for Kennedy, he came away with the backing of a plurality of independents: 36 percent chose him, compared with 31 percent for Trump and 30 percent for Biden. In a warning sign for Democrats, Kennedy was the leading choice for young voters, aged 18-34, in the poll’s surveyed population — 38 percent of whom chose the environmental lawyer. From the same age group, 32 percent picked Biden and 27 percent went for Trump. The poll is just another sign that Kennedy’s independent bid might have significant appeal from Americans wary of another Trump or Biden presidency. Kennedy, Jr. is collecting checks from past Donald Trump donors at a much higher rate than former Joe Biden contributors, a sign the independent presidential hopeful may pull more from the Republican electorate than Democratic voters. A POLITICO analysis of campaign finance records also shows that Kennedy’s bid has drawn millions of dollars from donors who kept their wallets shut in the last two presidential elections, suggesting he is activating people who have been turned off by what major parties have been offering. Kennedy is running as a self-described “spoiler,” and the draw that the former Democrat has with both the GOP and those who don’t have an obvious political home makes him an unpredictable threat to the establishment of both parties. Some Republicans are already trying to redefine Kennedy as a “typical Democrat,” revealing they’re worried about his appeal to GOP voters. The campaign finance data also suggests Kennedy may be sparking something new in the electorate: More than 60 percent of his large-dollar donors have no donation history on either ActBlue or WinRed, the two parties’ primary donation platforms, since the start of 2020. The Messenger reports: An intruder was arrested twice in one day at Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s Los Angeles home on Wednesday, his independent presidential campaign announced. The intruder was taken into police custody after Kennedy, Jr.'s private security detained him. After being released from police custody, he returned. Newsmax reports: Just when you think it can't get any worse, the crisis at our southern border keeps accelerating. Last month, the mayor of Eagle Pass, Texas, a border city with just 28,000 residents, declared a state of emergency over the surge of thousands of migrants crossing into his community, more than 2,000 a day. Kennedy, Jr. said he aims to overhaul the National Institutes of Health unilaterally to address the high prevalence of chronic disease, criticizing his opponents in the 2024 presidential campaign as maintaining a status quo that benefits pharmaceutical companies. Kennedy, who has long clashed with the public health establishment over vaccines and other matters, told the Washington Examiner in an exclusive interview that he will redirect the $42 billion in research funds for the NIH away from what he calls the “mercantile interests of the pharmaceutical industry." “In my first week in office, I’m going to assemble the upper echelon of the NIH, and we’re going to redirect [our] research funding,” Kennedy said. “We’re going to find out what is making our kids the sickest generation in history.” Kennedy said he primarily wants to target neurological disorders diagnosed during childhood, including autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities. He also said he is concerned by autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. "Unfortunately, we have public health agencies that are unwilling to look at the etiology of these chronic diseases," Kennedy said. "We need better science ... to identify the culprit, and we need to eliminate the exposure." Kennedy said Republicans and Democrats alike have allowed the public health bureaucracy to profit from the development of research emphasizing treatments and vaccines for infectious diseases rather than finding the root causes of chronic disorders. The scion of a Democratic dynasty, he’s aiming to win over voters who hunger for a third option on the ballot. In his campaign announcement last week at Philadelphia, Mr. Kennedy spoke before a banner reading, “Declare Your Independence.” The candidate leaned into the theme, urging a partisan-free focus on issues ranging from poverty and pollution to addiction and housing costs. Not so long ago, Americans agreed that these problems needed to be confronted to — as Mr. Kennedy’s uncle, President Kennedy, said — achieve “a rising tide” and “lift all boats.” Today, each party seeks to disqualify the other’s solutions, preaching to a choir where all but the most devout are growing restless in the pews. “In a two-sided conflict,” Mr. Kennedy told his supporters, “each side depends on the other to define themselves as good guys, in contrast to the other side, of course, the bad guys. … And that’s why we’ve seen both parties sacrificing their core values and the foundational canons of democracy.” On October 3, the Monmouth Poll found about two-thirds of party members uninspired about their presumptive nominees. The presidential candidate took aim at the U.S. government in his Oct. 15 appearance in front of approximately 200 people at the Relix Venue, saying the country's leadership is betraying Americans' freedom. Kennedy, Jr. may be paraphrasing that question for at least two valid but frustrating reasons: “If a potentially historic campaign is announced and no one is around to record it, does it make an impact?” This past Tuesday, at Independence Mall in front of thousands of people at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, RFK, Jr. gave a speech that declared his independence from both major political parties and confirmed his intent to run as an independent candidate for president in 2024. Choosing to do so next to the site where our Founding Fathers declared independence from the British Crown on July 4, 1776, was more than just symbolic for Kennedy — it was the most daring and important statement of his life. With the announcement, he embarked upon a quest to fell two deeply-rooted but decaying trees: the Democratic and Republican parties. Rhetorically, he hit all the right notes. But how many beyond those who were present heard his call to break free from the shackles of the entrenched and calcified parties to start anew? Some in the mainstream media appear to have made a calculated decision to ignore RFK’s campaign; Kennedy himself has said this about certain media outlets. His is a campaign that is newsworthy in part because, as reported by Politico and others, recent polling shows Kennedy could be “the most formidable independent candidate since Ross Perot” in 1992, who received 18.9% of the popular vote.
